A fairly large, green grasshopper, it has a high, arching, toothed pronotal crest. Head is broadly rounded. Body often is marked with brown spots ringed with yellow, including about 6 spots on each forewing. Forewings extend beyond the tip of the abdomen in males, but do not reach the tip of the abdomen in females. Hind wings are orange and normally bear an incomplete brown band. Males are 35-46 mm long, females 38-50 mm.
