Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
As the name suggests, this is a small species for this genus of mostly moderate- to large-sized grasshoppers, though it is not the smallest. It is brownish or gray, with a broad black stripe extending from the back of the eye across the lateral lobe of the pronotum. Forewings are long, extending beyond the tip of the abdomen, and marked centrally with a row of small alternating light and dark spots. Hind femora bear two oblique pale bands. Hind tibiae are pale blue. Males are about 15 mm in length, females 20 mm.
In males, the cerci are swollen at the base, narrowing at the middle, and forked distally. The furcula is small and triangular. The subgenital plate is expanded and notched at the tip. |
