Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
A small grasshopper, grayish brown above and yellowish below. The dorsal surface of the abdomen bears transverse light stripes. A black stripe extends from the back of the eye onto the lateral lobes of the pronotum. Femora are variable in length. When long, they extend to the tip of the abdomen. When short, they are about the length of the pronotum, are oval, and taper to a blunt point. Hind femora are yellowish with weak dark bands, Hind tibiae are red. Males are 14-19 mm long, females 19-25 mm.
In males, the cerci taper strongly in the basal half, then expand slightly to the bluntly rounded tip. The base is about twice the width of the apical region. The upper edge of the cerci is strongly concave, the lower edge slightly convex. The furcula bears elongate extensions that extend about half the length of the supra-anal plate and taper to narrow points. |
