Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
Usually grayish brown, bearing solid dark bands on the forewings. Some females are greenish. Median ridge of the thorax is pronounced. When viewed from above, the pronotum is marked with a light-colored X. Hind femora are marked with dark bands. Hind tibiae are bright blue. Males are 16-24 mm long, females 22-31 mm.
To differentiate the dusky grasshopper from the the southwestern dusky grasshopper, Encoptolophus subgracilis, one should observe the pronotum from above. The posterior angle of the pronotum in the dusky grasshopper is 90 degrees or less, whereas in the southwestern dusky grasshopper the angle is greater than 90 degrees. |
