Type Material
Holotype: "Male holotype from Mule Canyon, Calico Mountains, San Bernardino County, California, beating Larrea, March 17, 1955 (P.D. Hurd). Female holotype from Mule Canyon, Calico Mountains, San Bernardino County, California, beating Larrea, March 11, 1955 (Hurd and Wasbauer). Female paratype from the same locality, taken in the same manner on the same date (M. Wasbauer). All types are in the American Museum of Natural History; the paratypes are at the University of California (Muma, 1962, p. 24). Chelicerae Description: "Dentition of the chelicerae as shown in figures 26 and 27. Movable finger evenly curved from base to tip, principal tooth small, intermediate and anterior teeth missing, apical sixth of finger formed into mesially facing, cup-like structure, mesial tooth absent. Fondal notch obscure and without denticules. Fixed finger lightly curved upward, abruptly narrowed and hooked downward at tip; ventral margin of finger undulate but not bearing aborted teeth (Muma, 1962, p. 23). Chelicerae Setae Description: "Mesoventral groove of fixed finger distinct and occupying most of length of finger. Flagellum complex typical of group, with apical striate and plumose bristles strikingly prominent. Mesial plumose bristles of movable finger restricted to base of articulation area" (Muma, 1962, p. 23). Ctenidia Description: "First post-spiracular abdominal sternite with four long, slender ctenidia extending well beyond anterior margin of succeeding sternite (fig. 28). Middle pair slightly shorter" (Muma, 1962, p. 23). Diagnosis: "The fondal tooth pattern varies from specimen to specimen in this species, so a series will have to be examined to determine the exact formula. Males are easily distinguished by the cup-like structure on the movable finger of the chelicerae. Female structures, except for the opercula, are not distinctive" (Muma, 1962, p. 21). Eremochelis larreae – male holotype AMNH California: San Bernardino Co., Mule Canyon Calico Mountains 17 March 1955; P.D. Hurd Collector Beating Larrea (All measurements in sp description except papillae segments) Measurements:
Notes: Fondal teeth on dissected chelicera are gone. Took photos of fond teeth on intact chelicera (still on specimen). Propelt with dark markings; abdomen pale. Four very long, thin ctenidia; extend past edge of subsequent sclerite (almost to ½ point) (photo). Palp completely pale (no photo). |
