Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
No other conehead has a cone that is wider than long. Forewings extend more than 11 mm beyond the hind femora. Ovipositor is about as long as the hind femur. This species calls in early spring, more than a month before any other common conehead (genus Neoconocephalus). Its springtime song begins with a buzz interrupted at regular intervals of about 1 s and then shifts to a continuous buzz. The song of the summer generation adults (where one occurs) differs from that of the spring generation in being entirely like the beginning phase of the spring song- that is, a buzz that is continuous except for regular, momentary interruptions about once per second. Males are 43-60 mm long, females 51-67 mm.
