Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
A yellowish-brown grasshopper; tends to be darker above and lighter below. Dark stripes extend back from the eyes onto the lateral lobes of the pronotum, and from the top of the head dorsally onto the pronotum. Forewings extend beyond the tip of the abdomen and are uniformly colored. Hind tibiae are usually pale blue but sometimes reddish or yellowish. Males are 16-20 mm long, females 19-27 mm.
In males, the cerci are distinctive: boot-shaped, with the base rather rectangular, the "heel" small, and the "toe" bluntly rounded and curved inward. The extensions of the furcula are short, only about one-fourth the length of the supra-anal plate, and widely separated. |
