30. Tyloclerma marshalli Wibmer, new species Holotype male.-Body moderately oval, moderately convex; cuticle black with antennae reddish brown. Rostrum with scarcely distinct, longitudinal carina; dorsal surface not rugose, punctures very small to small, moderately shallow, unevenly moderately sparse on basal 1/2, larger, deeper and denser toward sides and on apical 1/2. Head lacking impunctate spot of strongly reticulate integument above each eye but with irregularly shaped, moderately oblique sulcus not reaching eye; with more or less round, deep, longitudinal frontal sulcus; punctures medium sized, moderately deep, dense above eyes, small, moderately shallow, moderately dense between eyes, smaller, shallower and sparser toward vertex. Protborax (fig. 26) as long as wide, moderately constricted on flanks near apex, sides subparallel in basal 1/2, converging moderately toward constriction, then strongly convex subapically in front of constriction, ocular lobes well developed; pronotal disc lacking impressions, punctures minute on disc, transverse subapical band of punctures very distinct; few punctures on flanks, medium to large, deep, dense along constriction, medium sized, moderately shallow above and in front of procoxae. elytra (fig. 26) 1.48 times as long as wide, 2.22 times as long as prothorax; humeri rounded, moderately prominent, sides diverging weakly in basal 1/4, then converging toward apex; strial punctures on basal 1/3 small to medium sized, moderately shallow to moderately deep, very sparse, unevenly distributed, on striae 1, 9 &: 10 more even; intervals weakly convex; macropterous. Metasternum moderately concave on median area; punctures medium sized, moderately shallow, unevenly sparse on median area, on lateral areas smaller, more shallow, more evenly distributed toward metepisternum. Abdomen with sternum 1 moderately concave along midline, sternum 2 weakly concave on basal l/2, sterna 3 &: 4 strongly longitudinally convex (easily seen in lateral view), sternum 5 with more or less round, moderately deep, median impression on apical 2/3; punctures medium sized, moderately shallow, moderately sparse on sternum 1 between metacoxae and along base, minute and sparse on remainder of sternum I, and on sternum 2, small on sterna 3 &: 4 and basal 1/3 of sternum 5, on apical 2/3 of sternum 5 medium sized, moderately shallow, moderately dense. Legs primarily reddish brown, with coxa, trochanter, apex of femur and apex of tibia darker; femur rather sparsely covered with moderately coarse setae; tibia rather sparsely covered with short to medium, moderately coarse, recumbent to subrecumbent setae; uncus nearly perpendicular to axis of tibia. Genitalia: fig. 96. Length (pronotum + elytra): 2.90 mm. (0.90 + 2.00). Holotype female.-Abdominal sternum 1 moderately convex; uncus weakly oblique, praemucro slightly oblique to axis of tibia. Genitalia: fig. 120. Length (pronotum + elytra): 3.30 mm. (1.05 + 2.25). Intraspecific variation.-The rostrum is 1.53-2.00 times as long as its width at the apex, and the rostral carina can be partly or completely indistinct. The frontal sulcus is extremely variable. It may be wide and very deep, or moderately shallow to shallow, sometimes deeper toward the frons, or it may be long and reach the vertex. Rarely it is short, or there is only a very short sulcus on the vertex, or it may be just a broad, moderately shallow impression. The sulcus above each eye is often obsolete, and then all the punctures above the eye are large (fig. 8). The punctures between the eyes are medium to large, moderately deep to deep. The prothorax has a ratio (length/width) of 0.93-1.05 (1.00 ± 0.03). Its widest point varies from the base to about the middle, although more rarely the sides are subparallel in the basal 1/2. A few specimens have 1 round impression on each side of the pronotal disc about 1/3 from the base. The transverse subapical band of punctures varies from slightly to very distinct. The elytra are 1.29-1.50 (1.38 ± 0.04) times as long as wide, and 1.84-2.22 (1.98 ± 0.08) times as long as the prothorax, with their widest point located between 1/4 and 1/3 from the base. The strial punctures are more even on the basal 1/3, whereas in a few specimens some punctures are slightly distinct on the apical 1/2, especially along the lst stria. The punctures on the lateral areas of the metasternum may be scarcely distinct. Some males have the basal 2/3 of abdominal sternum 2 concave. Length, pronotum + elytra: 2.50-3.90 mm. (3.23 ± 0.21). Remarks and comparative mtes.-This species is usually smaller than punctatum and caseyi, and it has the base of the elytra on a higher plane than the base of the prothorax (seen in a lateral view). T. minimum and lecontei have much smaller, scarcely distinct elytral strial punctures and smaller and shallower punctures on the head above the eyes. T. pseudaereum has larger pronotal punctures, the punctures on the flanks of the prothorax are medium sized throughout, and most elytral strial grooves are distinct, at least in part. Etymology.-I am happy to name this species for my friend and colleague Mr. G. Benn Marshall, who helped me by collecting many Tyloderma, both adults and immatures, during numerous collecting trips. Type-locality.-U.S.A., Florida, Leon County, Tall Timbers Research Station, Sheep Island.
