Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
A large, grayish brown grasshopper. Though variable in appearance, it is characteristically marked by large, clearly defined dark spots over the entire length of the forewings. Pale stripes on the forewings converge posteriorly, forming a V when viewed from above. Hind wings are yellow, pink, rose, or orange basally, and bear a transverse black band centrally. Central ridge of the pronotum is low and cut by two notches; and the area between the notches is particularly low and indistinct. Pronotum is unusually rough or bumpy. Inner face of the hind femora is normally bright orange or red, though sometimes dark blue. Hind tibiae are orange. Males are 25-48 mm long, females 26-65 mm.
