Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
Grayish brown in color with darker bands crossing the forewings. Lacks the elevated pronotal ridge found in some other Spharagemon species. Hind wings are typical of the group: pale yellow basally, a black transverse band centrally, and a transparent wing tip. Hind tibiae are orange. Males are 29-43 mm long, females 36-47 mm.
Within the range inhabited by Say's grasshopper there commonly occurs a similar species, the campestral grasshopper, Spharagemon campestris. The campestral grasshopper is distinguished by the presence of two notches or cuts in the median pronotal ridge; only a single cut is present in Say's grasshopper. |
