A uniformly grayish or grayish-brown insect, but sometimes the thoracic area is mostly black on the sides. Wings extend well beyond the tip of the abdomen, and the front margin of the male's forewing bears unusually large cells. Hind wing is largely transparent, but sometimes smoky at the tip. Antennae are threadlike. Upper and inner surfaces of the hind femora bear three black bands, and may be weakly banded on the outer face. Males are 16-23 mm long, females 21-30 mm.
